SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Yasaman Galer, who hails from South Brunswick and is an alumna of South Brunswick High School, was awarded the $30,000 top prize at TCNJ’s 2025 Mayo Business Plan Competition as a member of Team Juniper.
The group created a cutting-edge AI transcription system aimed at transforming medical documentation and billing procedures.
Alongside her teammates Livia Minaides and Isha Patwardhan, Galer assisted in developing a solution inspired by their individual insights into the shortcomings within the healthcare sector.
Patwardhan mentioned that we have witnessed our loved ones face difficulties in healthcare when they felt ignored by their doctors. This motivated them to develop a concept aimed at simplifying people’s lives.
Being a biology student with aspirations for medical school, and having observed doctors across different environments, Galer saw personally how cumbersome patient record-keeping can be.
She put together a multidisciplinary group consisting of her fellow biology major Patwardhan and marketing major Minaides to tackle this issue.
Their winning concept is a web-based application that records and transcribes medical consultations into concise visit summaries for both doctors and patients.
The AI-powered platform goes further by recommending appropriate insurance billing codes based on the transcription. By integrating with existing hospital systems, the app allows healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.
"Minaides remarked that he genuinely grasped the importance of networking," as he looked back at their preparatory phase, which entailed reaching out for advice from experts in the field, former students, and previous contest winners.
For Galer, who will graduate this May with a minor in finance, the contest offered crucial hands-on entrepreneurship experience that influenced her professional aspirations. She stated, “In the coming years, I aim to engage with startups or work within the tech industry somehow.” She added, “My true interest lies at the crossroads of healthcare, technology, and commerce.”
The competition featured 16 teams who developed their projects throughout the academic year. The finals, held at Mayo Concert Hall on March 26, saw the top three teams presenting to a panel of five alumni judges.
The competition awarded a total of $60,000 in prizes. Team NODE secured the $20,000 second-place prize for their app facilitating collaboration between schools, families, and healthcare providers to support student success. Team Confi/o took third place and $10,000 for their platform helping startups and small businesses create smartphone app prototypes without coding experience.
