Here’s a brief overview of the new features arriving for the PlayStation Portal cloud streaming beta.
PS Now Beta Introduces Fresh Features
The initial addition in this update enables sorting options for games listed in the Cloud Streaming (Beta) game catalogue.
You will be able to sort supported PS5 titles by the following categories: Recently added to PS Plus (the default option), Name (A-Z and Z-A), or by Release Date (Old-New and vice versa).
One of the most thrilling aspects of the update is undoubtedly the capability to record gameplay while you're engaged in cloud streaming sessions.
In the latest update, the Create button on the PlayStation Portal will become active during sessions, offering you three additional choices in the beta. Here they are:
- Press once: Display the create menu
- Press and hold: Take a screenshot
- Press twice: Begin/end capturing a video segment (supporting clips with resolutions up to 1920x1080 and durations up to 3 minutes are acceptable)
Photos and video snippets taken during cloud gaming sessions will be automatically sent to the cloud server and can be downloaded from the PlayStation App for up to two weeks.
The upcoming update will introduce a waiting screen for players who want to join when the streaming servers have reached capacity.
The screen will show you an estimated waiting period directly on the display, and once it’s your turn to proceed, your session will start automatically.
Sony is also introducing the ability to pause gameplay with this latest update.
If you tap the power button one time, you can place your Portal into standby mode, pausing the game. Any ongoing sessions will end if the device stays in this idle state for over 15 seconds.
The gameplay will briefly pause for players using PS Portal when they access the device’s quick menu or if a system alert pops up at the bottom of the screen.
Of course, pausing isn’t always an option, particularly not when you’re playing online multiplayer games.
Users will get alerts when a streaming session is nearing closure because of more than 10 minutes of inactivity.
At the conclusion of a gaming session, players will encounter a user feedback screen, encouraging them to share their level of satisfaction with their gameplay experience.
This update marks Sony's most recent PlayStation Portal enhancement and arrives just a few weeks following the previous one. including some iconic PlayStation 1 and PSP titles to the streaming library.
Reaching the PlayStation Portal Cloud Streaming Beta
If you aren’t yet signed up but want to make better use of your PlayStation Portal, ensure you have an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and live in one of the participating areas (both the U.S. and U.K. are included in this program).
You will require a broadband internet connection with a minimum speed of 5Mbps for both uploading and downloading data (however, to stream games at 1080p resolution, Sony suggests having an upload speed of at least 23Mbps and a minimum download speed of 15Mbps).
