SEOUL, April 10 (Yonhap) -- The Ministry of Industry announced on Thursday that South Korea intends to allocate 830 billion won (approximately US$561.2 million) for the R&D of industrial technologies in the upcoming year. This investment aims to strengthen the nation’s position in cutting-edge sectors amidst intensifying international rivalry.

According to statements from ministry representatives, the Department of Commerce, Manufacturing, and Energy will assess its investment strategy alongside specialists. This evaluation aims to enhance support for research and development initiatives focused on artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, transportation innovations, semiconductor technology, and various advanced fields.

Starting from last year, the government has outlined 124 R&D initiatives aimed at advancing key industries, set to benefit from an aggregated investment totaling 6.7 trillion won.

"Given the unpredictable domestic and international environments, the crucial advancement hinges on technology and innovation," stated Oh Seung-cheol, deputy minister of industries and enterprises at the ministry.
