( Massima — Under new safety guidelines from Meta, Instagram users who are younger than 16 will require parental consent to livestream or see nudity in direct messages.
The social media company is also extending safeguards for users under 18 to Facebook and Messenger.
Under the new changes, teens under 16 will be blocked from using Instagram Live unless allowed by a parent. Teens will also need permission to turn off a feature that blurs images containing suspected nudity in direct messages.
The blur feature was first introduced In April 2024 to safeguard users against sextortion scams.
In September, Meta initiated a Teen Account program To provide parents with additional ways to oversee their kids' internet usage, the Teen Account feature—which automatically sets accounts to private—will now be introduced on both Facebook and Messenger.
At least 54 million Since its release, Teen Accounts have been set up, as reported by Meta.
The modifications will initially be deployed for users based in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, with plans to roll them out globally over the next few months.
