Smart Watches vs. The Masters: What's Allowed on the Green?

It's well-known that Augusta National boasts a considerable list of things you can’t do , including having cell phones on the premises. This rule is strictly enforced; anyone caught with a phone—even if it’s in their pocket—risks being asked to depart from the property.

The benefit of the policy is not lost on the players, with Ludvig Aberg Quoting it as one of his favorite aspects of Augusta National prior to the 2025 event, he remarked, "The reason I love this is because the spectators aren’t constantly using their phones; hence, it feels like they’re far more involved. There’s significantly more direct interaction between them and the players. You can clearly see that they truly observe and value excellent golf."

Sure, but consider smartwatches. They are much smaller than typical phones and tend to be less noticeable. Is it acceptable to wear one at Augusta National?

The short answer is “yes,” but there are caveats. Basically, you are perfectly entitled to wear a smart watch while attending The Masters, but if you’re hoping to use it for almost anything other than checking the time, you will be out of luck.

Even though smart watches and fitness trackers appear on the The official Masters webpage's authorized list of permitted items , their usage "for telephone conversations, emails, text messages, as well as for capturing and/or transmitting photos, videos, or any other form of data" is forbidden."

In other words, no loophole exists to allow you to circumvent the prohibition on cameras during competition days By snapping a quick picture or recording a video of the activity using your smartwatch, attempting to utilize it for communication purposes might also get you into trouble.

Hence, although smartwatches are among the few electronic gadgets allowed at Augusta National, their functionality is heavily restricted.
