Dentist Gary Archer, often referred to as Hollywood’s "Godfather of FX Teeth,” has crafted iconic smiles for numerous film characters. His work includes Austin Powers’ “British teeth,” Mrs. Doubtfire’s removable dentures, and the sharp fangs of Vampire Lestat. Over his career spanning more than thirty years, Archer’s expertise in special effects dentistry can be seen in over 500 additional movies and television advertisements.
Among all facial features, the eyes and teeth stand out the most," Archer states. "Altering these elements can significantly transform one’s look.

Over the past several years, advancements in special effects and the increasing use of CGI have altered certain techniques employed by Archer and his deceased dental technician father. "For instance, we could fabricate a set of teeth and paint them green like the frosting on a birthday cake. This turns the mouth into a green screen where features such as characteristics, dialogue, gold, and diamonds can later be inserted during post-production."
Other enhancements have allowed molds to set in the mouth in less than a minute, resulting in products that are both light and robust. This strength is necessary because actors often treat them roughly," according to Archer.
Archer now relies more often on digital dentistry as well. He mentions having an instrument roughly the size of a magic wand, equipped with small cameras. This tool can glide gently over the teeth, capturing images that are subsequently reproduced either through molds or using a 3D printer. Afterward, these dental pieces are sent directly to the filming site. Occasionally, he doesn’t get to interact personally with the individual whose character’s teeth he creates.
