Explore Space Without a Spaceship: Must-See Attractions at the GSC

Guests at the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) can now enjoy an enhanced view of the universe with a recent addition. Starry Safari The lobby showcases a sophisticated deep-space telescope along with a functional solar scope. These devices are not only visually striking but also entirely operative, allowing visitors to experience celestial phenomena firsthand.

Take a look at the What 2 See At the GSC series here.

"We aimed to highlight thesescopes prominently,” states Ron Settle, GSC’s Vice President of Innovation and an exceptional astronomer. “These devices enable us to showcase the splendor of outer space without leaving the urban area.”

Each Friday evening, provided the weather cooperates, GSC sets up the deep-space telescope for Starry Safari—an outdoor live-stargazing event right next to the facility. Even with light pollution, sophisticated filters enable the telescope to display vivid, real-time pictures of far-off nebulas, galaxies, and supernovae—spanning our solar system and deeper into space. These visuals are then shown on a large screen for everyone to enjoy.

On weekdays, visitors may have the opportunity to experience a Sunday Safari, during which they use the solar scope to examine the Sun with exceptional clarity.

"It appears magical, yet it's entirely based on science," asserts Settle.

Organize Your Arrival Using The Below Details:

  • Starry Safari: Every Friday at 1 hour past sunset, excluding the third Friday of each month.

  • On weekdays, observing the sun during daylight hours

  • Weather permitting—visit GSC’s website for updates prior to your visit.
