Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), a public institution, emphasizes high-quality education, research, innovation, as well as the development and dissemination of technological advancements.
DeKUT was founded by the Kenyan government in December 2012 as per the University Act 2012.
The university is an offshoot of Kimathi University College of Technology (KUCT), which was previously part of Jomo Kenyaata University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Prior to KUCT, the institution operated under the title Kimathi Institute of Technology (KIT). This establishment was founded by the local community with the aim of enhancing societal improvement through advancements in education and technology.
DeKUT provides a broad spectrum of programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across different Schools and Institutes.
These programs span various fields including Engineering, Health & Applied Sciences, Business Management and Economics, Computing, Food Science and Technology, Leather Technology, Geothermal Energy Technology, Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Tourism and Hospitality, Criminology and Forensic Management, as well as Technical and Professional Studies.
The university additionally provides diploma and certificate programs aimed at developing intermediate-level technical competencies.
The courses provided by the tertiary education institute have been endorsed by the Senate along with different specified organizations such as the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and the Commission for University Education (CUE). The CUE was set up by the Kenyan government via the Commission for University Education Act of 2010.
